Role of data collection in decisions to replace, renew or maintain aging assets

Our director Richard Scantlebury participated in a roundtable hosted by New Civil Engineer recently, on the growing role of improved data collection and sharing in the decisions we make about replacing, renewing or maintaining ageing assets.

This has been well demonstrated during our work on the A13 River Lea Crossing in East London, where data collection was essential to providing the evidence base in order to justify refurbishment instead of replacement.

This included materials testing, ground investigations, measured surveys, monitoring of the pin bearings and assessments. In most cases we had reasonable data from previous inspections and monitoring, so we were able to compare data and appreciate the change over an approximately 10-year period.  In some ways understanding the change in condition was more useful that having a snap shot of the condition at the time of the inspections and monitoring.
