River Lea Crossing refurbishment project wins at Bridges Award 2025
Our refurbishment project for the 90 year-old River Lea Crossing in East London has been recognised for challenging the status quo on bridge replacement at the prestigious Bridges 25 Awards. Following 14 years of monitoring, assessments and inspections we were able to demonstrate that refurbishment was a feasible option for our client Road Management Services (A13) on behalf of Transport for London. The project will retain 84% of the original structure and result in significant carbon savings and whole life cost.
Carnwath Rd shaft redesign for Thames Tideway wins 2024 innovation award
We were recognised at the NCE Tunneling Awards 2024 for our innovative shaft solution at Thames Tideway Carnwath Road for Balfour Beatty / Morgan Sindall Infrastructure / BAM JV on behalf of Tideway London. We received the award for “Innovation in Shaft Design & Construction”, with judges stating they were impressed with the high degree of innovation and an ambitious use of precast concrete in a confined and congested environment, and the integration of temporary and permanent works.
HS2 M42/M6 Link Viaducts win at ICE West Midlands Awards 2024
The HS2 M42/M6 Motorway Link viaducts have been named ICE West Midland’s winning Medium Project for 2024. We checked the permanent works, and were lead checker of the temporary works for both four span, composite high-speed railway viaducts, made up of two 45m main spans – one over each carriageway of the M42-M6 link road.
Thames Tideway Carnwath Rd Shaft Wins 2023 Tekla Award
Our BIM design of Thames Tideway Carnwath Road shaft for BMB Joint Venture has been named best Infrastructure Project in Tekla UK’s 2023 Awards. We redesigned the upper shaft as part of a value engineering exercise to enable construction of those elements ‘top down’. This redesign eliminated the need for 20,000m³ of falsework volume and enabled works at the bottom of the shaft to commence before and during construction of the upper shaft, unlocking significant programme benefits.
Our Luton DART models win in 2020 Tekla Awards
Luton DART Central Terminal and Parkway stations have been named winner of the Public Projects category in the 2020 Tekla Awards. As structural engineers on these projects, both stations were fully modelled within Tekla Structures to BIM Level 2, with approximately 42,000 tonnes of structural concrete and 1,660 tonnes of structural steel included. We also modelled all reinforcement in 3D, approximately 2,400 tonnes. We also detailed all the cladding support system within the same model to ensure fit around the complex geometry.
We’re the NCE100 2019 Trending20 Champion!
We have retained our place on the NCE Trending20 list of SME engineering firms, and been named Trending20 Champion for 2019 after achieving the highest score for our submission and impressing judges with the breadth of our projects and initiatives. Our work as structural designer for Indonesia’s first mass rapid transport system, MTR Jakarta (which included some challenging design constraints), was recognised, and our director Richard Scantlebury received an Outstanding Presenter award for his presentation on this project.
Edinburgh Gateway Station Wins Saltire Award
Edinburgh Gateway Station won the building category in the 2017 Saltire Awards sponsored by the ICE Scotland. The £36m interchange station is part of Network Rail’s EGIP programme to improve capacity on the busy commuter line between Edinburgh and Glasgow. Working with contractor Balfour Beatty and consultants IDP and WSP, we undertook design of key elements of the project including an underpass under the A8 and an anchored retaining wall.
Ordsall Chord Temporary Works wins 2017 BCI Award
Innovative temporary works that helped deliver Network Rail’s Ordsall Chord project in Manchester were recognised at the 2017 British Construction Industry Awards. We worked closely with Skanska’s temporary works team to assess and modify the existing bridge that was used to install the temporary towers which in turn facilitated both demolition of the existing bridge and erection of the new network arch.
Hewson ranked 19th in the 2017 NCE100 Awards
We were ranked 19th out of the top 100 civil engineering companies in the UK during the 2017 NCE100 Awards. The NCE100 is a totally independent, authoritative assessment of what it means to be an excellent civil engineering practice. The 100 businesses are chosen and ranked following a comprehensive, three stage judging process.
ICE Wales 2016 Award for Innovation
ICE Wales recognised the significant advances in bridge engineering evident in the Pont Briwet viaduct by presenting the project team with their 2016 Award for Innovation. We led a team in providing the detailed design for the 1.5km road and 800m rail improvement scheme which included a seven span viaduct using precast beams and crossheads, and separate decks for the highway and railway. The 134m long fully integral viaduct does not have bearings or formal movement joints and is the longest structure of its type in the UK.
2013 Queen’s Award for Enterprise
We received a 2013 Queens Award for Enterprise in the International Trade category. The award was presented to us by Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant for Surrey, Dame Sarah Goad DCVO JP. The citation noted us to be a leading bridge and civil structures designer who over a period of 5 years had recorded a growth in international work exceeding 500%.
NCE Small Consultant of the Year 2011 Winner
We won the UK Small Consultant of the Year Award 2011 from the NCE and ACE. One of eight shortlisted companies, the award covered all civil engineering consultants in the UK with tremendous competition from across a broad spectra of the industry.
