Edinburgh Gateway has been shortlisted in the ‘Most Innovative Transport Project of the Year’ category at this year’s Scottish Transport Awards. Our proposal and detailed design for upgrading an existing retaining wall structure, rather than removing it and replacing it, was specifically highlighted in the submission:

“A key innovation of the project saw the team extend the life design of a temporary structure
supporting a cutting for the new tramway, from two years to 120, significantly reducing
cost and the need for disruptive construction.”

“Having engaged specialist designers Hewsons, the team was able to determine that by increasing the
cover to the reinforcement in the existing structure, it could be retained. This innovative intervention not
only saved the project circa £2.3m in construction costs, but it also significantly reduced safety risks as
well as potential disruption to the tram operations and had multiple environmental benefits in carbon
cost savings in concrete and plant operations and reduced noise disruption.”
