Located in Wennington Marshes, Rainham, the jetty was designed by Bullen & Partners and constructed by Costain in 1984 as a temporary structure as a totally enclosed unloading dock in the river. It was used to handle domestic refuse in containers for final transport to the disposal site under a GLC contract awarded to Cleanaway Ltd. in the 1980s.
It was used to receive spoil from the Thames Tideway Tunnelling Project. Our client, Land and Water Services, purchased the jetty and is operating it to create a significant area of new wetland habitat from re-engineered spoils on the marshes for the RSPB.
We were appointed to assess the existing jetty structure for the new bulk materials handling regime and to design the necessary strengthening and repairs. This included consideration of an existing 610mm diameter circular steel pile damaged by ship collision. Our client subsequently received a planning change allowing the structure to remain permanently resulting in our scope being extended to include assessment of the west pile cap for crane usage plus a number of other design and assessment tasks.
