We worked with Robert Bird Group to provide structural engineering advice on a 1906 eight-storey structural steelwork framed commercial office building which is supported by the existing London Underground Holborn Station and the tunnels below.

Built during the early nineteenth century, the form of construction used comprising encased steel columns was similar to other buildings constructed elsewhere in London at the time. The details used at the time were not sufficient to prevent water ingress and subsequently corrosion of the steelwork has been identified in similar structures including a number of well known buildings in Regents Street.  As a result the phenomena is known as “Regents Street Disease”.

We developed the requirements for a detailed survey, investigation, material testing and intrusive opening to examine the structural frame and steel connections of the building and subsequently assess its condition. The intention is that this will form part of the Oversite (Air Rights) Development over the future enlarged upgraded underground station.
