Chippenham Station “Access for All” Scheme

Client:  AmcoGiffen

Location:  England

Year completed:  2021

Services: Construction engineering, detailed design, structural assessment

We provided temporary works design and checking services to enable the installation of a proposed, additional passenger lift at Chippenham station.

Temporary support to the excavation for the lift shaft was provided, in the form of trench sheets and proprietary props. Due to the ground conditions a double layer of props was provided to restrain the trench sheets at their base as rock would be encountered above formation level.

We also provided design services for a temporary timber hoarding, with simple post in hole foundations, to separate the works area from the Network Rail boundary fence, foundations for access scaffolds and confirmed that the existing hardstanding was robust enough to support crane outrigger loads.

We also undertook an assessment of the existing footbridge to demonstrate that it was stable during modification works to install the landing to the new lift shaft. Our assessment demonstrated that intrusive props were not required. The temporary support to the deck that was required was part of the design services we provided.
