The 6.7km standard single carriageway bypass of Belturbet included the provision of two significant bridge structures, the River Erne Bridge and the Aghaguig bog Bridge; the River Erne Bridge consisted of a three span extradosed cable-stayed type bridge and was the first of its kind in Ireland and in the UK.

The bridge was approximately 141m long consisting of a central span of 69m across the River Erne and two side spans of 36m each. The extrados bridge structure included a prestressed concrete deck, architecturally enhanced pylons and concrete foundations. The Aghnaguig Bog Bridge was a three-span prestressed concrete box girder river bridge with a central span of 115m built by the balanced cantilever method.

We undertook the independent design check of both bridges along with a reinforced concrete box underpass and noise barriers.
