Client:  M50 Design & Construction Ltd

Location:  Ireland

Year completed:  2009

Services: Detailed design

The M50 Upgrade scheme around Dublin was one of the largest road schemes to go under construction in Ireland at the time.

We undertook detailed design of a 2-span composite box girder bridge deck. The geometry was extremely complex as the structures was location on a highway transition curve with varying cross fall. Our design included substantial plan bracing of the boxes for the temporary condition before construction of the concrete slab. In addition, an innovative full depth precast concrete deck system was uses to minimise the lane occupation time needed for construction of the bridge. By maximising off-site construction techniques, we were able to minimises the time taken to build this structure. Given the very tight working space adjacent to live traffic our “off-site” design solution had significant advantages for our contractor client.
