CBDG Annual Conference: assessing concrete strength in existing bridges

Our Technical Director, Craig Giaccio, is presenting alongside Tony Jones, Technical Director at The Concrete Centre, at the Concrete Bridge Development Group’s annual conference in London on 24th June. This year’s conference focuses on renewing existing assets and enhancing the resilience and durability of concrete bridges.

Craig and Tony will discuss the new 2nd Generation Eurocode 2 provisions for determining design compressive strength of concrete in existing structures using core tests. This includes the new statistically based method for evaluating the concrete partial material factor for existing structures, and adjustments for converting insitu values to characteristic strength values for assessment.

Their presentation compares the resulting design compressive strengths from the new provisions with those obtained using 1st Generation Eurocode 2 and National Highways DMRB CS 455, drawing on core and cube strength data from the Concrete Society’s 2004 test programme. It also outlines the UK National Annex choices made in relation to these provisions and the ongoing calibration work.

The work was carried out in part to support the calibration of the UK National Annex provisions through BSI committee B/525/2, of which Craig and Tony are both members. It contributes directly to the evidence base needed to keep the UK’s ageing bridge stock safely, reliably and efficiently in service.
