Bridge Leap-Frog

6 June 2022

We were very pleased to see the successful movement of the TKO Southern Bridge superstructure by lifting it over the Cross Bay Link (CBL) approach viaducts.  This was part of an innovative erection scheme that we developed with contractor, CRBC, to overcome the challenges of the unique site constriants.

The Southern Bridge is a new iconic arch footbridge with a 100m-long main span using high strength grade S690 steel for its superstructure. This CEDD project will enhance pedestrian connectivity in the TKO development area of Hong Kong.

The final location of the Southern Bridge is at the northeast side of the newly constructed CBL and therefore a key challenge for its erection is to move the prefabricated bridge superstructure across the CBL. To overcome the limited headroom constraints we devised a unique erection method which enabled the Southern Bridge to be firstly lifted onto the CBL deck from the ‘outer side’, and then lifted off from the ‘inner side’, hence completing its ‘bypassing’ of the CBL in a safe and efficient manner. After this key milestone, the prefabricated bridge deck is now secured on a designated temporary storage area and awaiting for its final lifting onto the permanent piers.

We are working as CRBC’s designer providing erection engineering, temporary works design, permanent works value engineering design and BIM services.
