Birtley lift-off

1 September 2023

It was great to see the opening of the new canal lifting bridge on the Wey and Arun Canal at Birtley in Surrey.  This lifting bridge is a key part of the Wey and Arun Canal Trust‘s ambitious restoration plans for the 23 mile long canal linking the River Wey near Guildford with the River Arun at Pallingham.  Through donations and the work of volunteers the Trust has opened two new lifting bridges on a 300m section of restored canal.   The hydraulically powered hand pump operated bridge will allow canal boats to pass under the route of a key walking and horse-riding route.

We were appointed as the Category 3 independent checker for the bridge structure.  We are also appointed by the Trust for the design of a new highway bridge and footbridge at Tickner’s Heath further south on the route of the restored canal.
