Cross Bay Link main span successfully installed

4 January 2021

The 10,000T Cross Bay Link steel arch bridge in Hong Kong was successfully erected on the day of the Chinese Spring Lantern Festival. A true collaboration among multiple parties for three years – it’s great to celebrate with everyone involved at this historic moment!!

Erection was carried out by the float-in method that utilizes natural tidal movement in combination with barge ballasting to safely lower the bridge deck onto the permanent V-piers. This is the largest double-arch bridge in the world ever erected using such method. The entire erection process was extremely smooth and all the site works were completed a few hours ahead of the planned schedule.

Hewson have been the Main Contractor’s designer since 2018. We have provided the full construction engineering for this bridge covering its assembly, transportation and erection process. We also designed major permanent and temporary works including the precast V-piers that support the 1km long concrete viaducts.
