The dual carriageway provides a new high-capacity route into Wigan town centre from the south of the borough. The proposed A49 Goose Green to Westwood Park Link Road project includes four major structures to bridge existing watercourses, canals and a primary road. The scheme also incorporates improvements to pedestrian, cycle  and public transport access on the existing A49 and B5238.

We designed the principal structures on the scheme consisting of four overbridges and two retaining walls. Extensive use was made of BIM to facilitate close collaboration with the lead consultant and other specialist suppliers. A key challenge on this project was the soft ground encountered to a depth of 7m and overcome through the use of ground improvement in the form of vibro and controlled modulus columns.
