The scheme involved construction of a new second spillway at Bayham Lake to give additional flood protection to the existing earth fill dam. The proposal given was to form a new 10 metre wide concrete spillway at the north end of the dam along the alignment of a previous smaller channel that was part of the original Repton designed landscape. The spillway included a weir and three curved cascades.
We were appointed for the feasibility study and detailed design of a new 32m long concrete spillway structure incorporating an access bridge for Bayham Lake and the river. We also assisted with reviewing temporary works proposals, construction support and supervision. The dam is situated on the River Teise near the historic Bayham Abbey within a conservation area.
The capacity of the spillway had to be increased to accommodate storm flows due to the increase in climate change. The provision of new penstock chamber and gates allows for greater control of the water levels.
