Carlisle Southern Link Road River Caldew Bridge

Client: Morgan Sindall

Location:  England

Year completed:  2022

Services: Independent Cat III check

We undertook the Category 3 independent check of two bridges for this major new highway scheme around Carlisle in Cumbria.

The Caldew Bridge (pictured) is a three-span steel-composite girder viaduct with a 70m main span crossing the River Caldew as well as the Cambrian railway line.  The deck is integral with  the masonry clad feature piers but supported on bearings at the abutments.

We also checked a single 24.5m skew span prestressed beam and slab integral bridge over the Est Coast Main Line Railway.  This bridge had reinforced earth wingwalls.

In addition to the permanent works check we also prepared temporary works designs for erection of the steelwork on the Caldew Bridge including the temporary jacking and restraint system required until the permanent bearings are installed.
