Central Kowloon Route – Central Tunnel

Client: Bouygues Travaux Publics

Location:  Hong Kong

Year completed:  2022

Services: Construction engineering, detailed design

The Central Tunnel Contract forms a crucial part of the Central Kowloon Route in Hong Kong. It involves approximately 2.8km-long dual 3-lane tunnel between Yau Ma Tei and Ma Tau Kok. The construction is being carried out from a number of designated access shafts located at Yau Ma Tei, Ma Tau Kok and Ho Man Tin.

A key focus of the project during the construction phase is to minimise potential disruptions on the densely populated areas in central Kowloon. As a result, various mitigation measures are implemented to control the dust, noise and vibration effects arising from the tunnel construction activities including the drill and blast works.

We were appointed by the main contractor to provide detailed design and erection methodology for the temporary noise enclosure at Ma Tau Kok, which is a 50m long x 32m wide x 16m high steel frame structure. We also provided structural review and modification design on an existing working platform at the temporary access shaft.
