Crandon Bridge Bridgewater 33kV Cable Scheme

Client:  JSM Group Services Ltd

Location:  England

Year completed:  2025

Services:  technical advice

We were appointed by JSM to provide technical advice in relation to installing 8 No. 33kV cables across Crandon Bridge in Bridgewater, Somerset.  An AIP was prepared to obtain TAA approval for the installation. The bridge is a single span reinforced concrete beam and slab bridge.  The carriageway surfacing has been increased to provide a significant camber across the bridge and JSM propose to install new ducts in the verge adjacent to the masonry parapet.

The 8 ducts will be installed in concrete up to 500mm deep.  The proposals are likely to increase the load on the structure which is already near capacity under the carriageway so it is anticipated we will be asked to provide a load assessment.   Trial holes have confirmed that the service trench is already filled with concrete but further holes are instructed to determine if this can be removed to avoid the need to raise the footway and parapet height.
