Galway County Council appointed Hewson Consulting Engineers to assist in developing the maintenance and rehabilitation works required for the River Suck Bridge, a five-span masonry arch bridge located in Ballinasloe town, Co. Galway.

River Suck Bridge is a National Monument, originally constructed in 1575 and widened using similar materials in 1745.  As part of these works, a structural assessment was carried out with repair and remedial works designed in keeping with the heritage and historical importance of the structure.

Our proposed remedial works included strengthening of the arches where separation was observed, redesigning surface water drainage to prevent water ingress into the masonry, repair of the deteriorated masonry and breakwaters. Ministerial consent was obtained prior to construction. All works were carried out using traditional methods in keeping with the structure.
