Underpinning under foot at Luton Airport

Construction work on the Luton DART scheme at Luton Airport is well underway.  We are structural designer for the two stations on the project and it is pleasing to see our designs coming to life.  One particularly tricky element at the airport terminal station is the need to underpin an existing footbridge that goes directly over the track alignment.

The existing footbridge piled foundations have been underpinned and this rather stunning photo show how.  We have very carefully designed the underpinning system to ensure that footbridge deflections are limited to preset limits.
